7 Kitchen Lighting Ideas for 2026

7 Kitchen Lighting Ideas for 2026

The kitchen is the most central to a home’s function – it’s where family will gather, cook, and converse. Kitchen lighting can go beyond function and bleed into personality; designing your kitchen is an opportunity to find fixtures that hold their own against the benchtops, cabinetry, and furniture you’ve invested in.

If you’re struggling for design inspiration, here are our current favourite kitchen lighting ideas, curated by the lighting consultants at Nook Collections.

1. Oversized Pieces

A single, oversized pendant above a kitchen island or dining table does a lot of the heavy lifting; functionally and aesthetically. Whether you're working with a large open-plan space or a more compact kitchen, a statement piece above the island can anchor the setting.

Saliscendi Pendant Light

The Saliscendi Pendant is a fun, retro-style pendant light that would make for the perfect kitchen or dining table fixture. Offering both direct and indirect light, the Saliscendi is available in glossy grey/white, red, or green finishes for those who want to add a pop of colour.

NL12 Pendant Light

The NL12 is light in art-form. This is not a pendant to blend within a room - it’s designed specifically to draw attention, with twelve sleek borosilicate glass tubes suspended between  two black rings. It’s the perfect conversation starter and would sit perfectly above a kitchen island or dining table.

2. Linear Lighting

Linear lighting is everywhere in 2026 - it’s the perfect type of fixture for the kitchen, above a workspace, kitchen island, or dining setting. Suspended from the ceiling, the right linear light can be both dramatic and minimal, offering uniform illumination.

Coral Linear Bar Pendant Light

The Coral Linear Bar Pendant is designed for an elegant kitchen; the fixture is made up of a metal bar with ten hand-blown lamp shades that reflect and flicker light across the room. The suspension cords are almost invisible, giving the effect that the light is floating in mid-air.

Huntington Linear Pendant Light

The perfect pendant for a marble or granite kitchen island, the Huntington Linear Pendant offers a timeless suspension that would suit traditional, mid-century, and contemporary kitchens. With aged braze finishes and a soft, glass tube light, the simple and sleek design ticks boxes for both form and function.

3. Different Textures

We’re all about texture at Nook Collections. Our trend report for 2026 includes a lot of different textures and materials, particularly in the kitchen. Think aged brass, polished metals, and rustic timbers. Even if you’re merely looking for a cosmetic upgrade, the right textured light can breathe new life into your kitchen.

Here are a couple of our favourite lights that can bring new textures into the kitchen without overpowering the setting.

Tenn Pendant Light

The Tenn Pendant light is another linear pendant, made from beautiful, natural Australian timber. It encases an inbuilt LED strip, providing a layered depth to the chosen wood. Available in different lengths to match the length of an island or kitchen bench, the light comes in Monterey Pine, Spotted Gum, or American Oak species.

Formation Lux Pendant Light

The Formation Lux Pendant Light is exactly that - luxurious. The light is hand-assembled in Melbourne and features a sleek folded body (available in brushed brass, aged brass, or brush aluminium) that encases the light, and a marble finish that can be customised to different natural stones including Verde Guatemala, Nero Marquina, Hermes Grey, Unfilled Travertine, Arabescato White, and Calacatta Viola.

4. Grouped Pendants

What’s better than one pendant? Two. Or even - three! Suspended in groups, the right pendant light can make a functional and aesthetic lighting installation, ideal for over dining settings, above a workspace, or in a kitchen corner.

Aballs Pendant Light

The Aballs Pendant is a handcrafted orb pendant that is available in three finishes and three size variations. When hung in a cluster, the Aballs pendant is both a mesmerising and valuable source of light in the kitchen. Ideally hung above a kitchen table or an island bench; suits contemporary, modern kitchens.

Enno Pendant Light

A fun, antique-inspired pendant, the Enno is best hung in a linear fashion, or over a sink for task lighting. The light offers a unique trapezoid shaped bulb, with a matte-white glass finish and casing options in solid brass, graphite, oak, and Walnut.

5.Task/Wall Lighting

Wall-mounted task lighting in the kitchen is often overlooked. For prep areas, breakfast bars, or sections of the kitchen that don’t get lighting from elsewhere,  a wall light adds functional illumination without taking up bench space.

Darci Short Wall Light

The Darci Short Wall Light by Nordlux has an adjustable lamp head, matte black finish, and a touch switch for easy operation. Hard-wired only, it's well suited to kitchen counters, a coffee bar, or an area that needs directional task lighting.

Swing Pendant Light

The Swing Pendant Light is part of the Chapeau family and would make for a gorgeous addition to a colourful, playful kitchen design. With a manual bracket that allows for tilting and direction of light flow, the pendant can be suspended above a workspace, breakfast bar, or kitchen table for after school homework.

6. Layered Lighting

Layering your kitchen lighting is the perfect way to combine different fixtures at different heights and positions. An overhead recessed ceiling light may do the bulk of the work, but wall lights either side of a shelving unit can add depth and warmth to the space. We recommend layered lighting in every room of the house, but in particular, the kitchen - so you can have low, soft lighting when the mood strikes.

Uppsala 2lt Wall Light

The Uppsala 2lt Wall Light features two curved arms with cotton lampshades, and is available in a variety of finishes. A vintage-inspired form that works in kitchens leaning toward warmer, more lived-in kitchen aesthetics.

Collier Wall Light

Another retro-inspired design, the Collier Wall Light features a heritage brass base, with a clear seeded glass casing around the bulb. Ideal for next to cabinets or hallways entering into the kitchen.

7. Unique Ceiling Lights

If your kitchen has a low ceiling, or you don’t want to install a pendant but you still want a fun, unique, ceiling light - there are plenty of options.

Wobbly Ceiling Light

The Wobbly Ceiling Light is handcrafted from Australian clay by We Ponder - each piece is slightly different in size and finish. Rated IP44, which makes it suitable for kitchen environments. A small, considered choice that adds texture without demanding attention.

Urban Mini Ceiling Light

The Urban Mini Ceiling Light by Axolight is a minimalist aluminium fixture with a built-in dimmable LED, available in bronze, nickel, or white. It’s one of those lighting fixtures that blends seamlessly but also adds considerably to the overall aesthetic.
